Pierce: "It all depends on Szavay"

Sunday 10 Febuary 2008 at 04h28

On site at the Stade Coubertin as a consultant for France 4, Mary Pierce thinks the final between Agnès Szavay and Anna Chakvetadze will depend on the way the Hungarian youngster plays.

Mary, what are your thoughts on Marion Bartoli's semifinal match?
First of all, we are all disappointed not to see a French player in the final.  Chakvetadze did what she did Friday night against Amélie (Mauresmo).  It took her some time to warm up and play her way into the match.  She opened the match with unforced errors, but picked up her level later on in the match.  It's a shame that Marion's (Bartoli) back was hurting..  But, that's part of sports, unfortunately.  I just hope it's nothing serious and that she'll be back on the court very soon.

How do you see the final between Szavay and Chakvetadze?
I really like Szavay.  I think she's got a great physique, a great game, and she strikes the ball beautifully.  On Sunday, I think a lot depends on how she plays.  If she keeps the errors down, she's got a real chance.  Then again, Chakvetadze does have a great defensive game...

So, your pick is Szavay?
No.  On paper, it's Chakvetadze.  I just really appreciate Szavay's game and I think she can win.  But, the favorite is Chakvetadze because she's got more experience in these types of situations.
