Jelena Jankovic: Last Minute Replacement

A big name has just been added to the draw for the Open GDF SUEZ following Maria Sharapova's withdrawal.  Serbia's Jelena Jankovic, the world number 1 just two weeks ago, will be coming to Paris.  And looking to show everyone she has big plans for this season.

Beware of the killer backhand!  Jelena Jankovic's trademark shot and favorite weapon will be on display in Coubertin.  With the Serbian just losing her number 1 ranking, we can be sure she will be hungry to show French fans and the whole tennis world that she has no intention of sitting back and twiddling her thumbs.  The 23 year-old loves being front and center.  Her intensive winter training was supposed to help her hold onto the top spot and claim her first Grand Slam title.

However, she was weakened by a bad flu early in the year and the US Open finalist didn't play any tournaments leading into the Australian Open.  And she paid the price with a quarterfinal thrashing by Marion Bartoli.  The former world number 1 doesn't like early exits and had gotten used to always making it through to the last four.  She'll be hungry to get back on track and anyone standing in her way at Coubertin should watch out!

The revelation of 2008, this player from Belgrade quickly overshadowed countrywoman Ana Ivanovic last season.  More consistent and solid, Jankovic took titles in Rome, Beijing, Stuttgart, and Moscow.  Given her liking last year for tournaments in capital cities, it would be fitting for Paris to be the next city on her victory list.
