Serena Williams is in good shape today! With a very impressive service, the Number 1 seed made short work of Croatian Karolina Sprem (145th). The American won 6-1, 6-2 in 58 minutes, and will meet Frenchwoman Emilie Loit Friday for the quarterfinals!

Although her French is still a bit shaky, her tennis got an A+ here at Coubertin today. Thanks to her superb serve (100% points earned from her first ball over the entire match) the World N° 1 flew over all obstacles from the beginning. Two breaks in the 1st and 3rd game set her apart 4-0 just 13 minutes into the match. With clenched fists, the recent Australian Open titlist carried off the first set 6-1 in 25 minutes, on her 3rd set point.

The new girl in town kept up the same pace from the start of the following set. Snagging a break in the 2nd set allowed her to lead 3-0 and to serenely head for the quarterfinals. Unsurprisingly, she concluded the match (6-1, 6-2) in just under one hour (58) with a last forehand return right along the line.

"Momma Smash" to meet "Milou"

Emilie Loit (World 134th), who attended the match as a consultant for the channel broadcasting the meeting, was right to be nervous about her upcoming confrontation with a very fit Serena Williams. The qualified Frenchwoman will compare talents with the American on Friday for a spot in the last four of the 17th Open GDF SUEZ. It should be simply smashing!
