Vera Dementieva, Elena's mother, is always there to support her daughter both off and on court but she very rarely speaks about herself. Yet she exceptionally accepted to answer our questions with sincerity and a good sense of humor.

Where would Elena Dementieva, the 2010 Open GDF SUEZ number one seed, be today if it weren't for the dedication and strength of her family, and especially her mother Vera? A very discreet yet determined woman, Vera accepted to spend some time with us to answer questions about herself and her daughter. It was about time one of the apparently most reserved figures of the Sony Ericsson WTA Tour got in the spotlight, even for a brief moment.

Vera, you always sit still and don't show your emotions too much during Elena's matches. Are you truly that quiet and calm inside?
I'm actually quite surprised to hear you say that I look calm because the feeling I have is that I show my emotions way too much when I'm on the court side and that I behave in a very exaggerated way. You know, no matter how many years I've been traveling with Elena (And that's a lot of years, believe me!), every tournament and every match feels like it's the first one. And because of that, I feel like I'm still reacting the same way, even after all that time.

Speaking of first competitions... When Elena was a kid, were you expecting her to become such a great champion?
No, not really. I never really thought she was going to reach such a high level. I never set specific goals for her either, I just tried to get Elena involved in different activities so she would get to try different things in life, like arts, music, other sports so she would have interesting things to do and possibly choose one of those things for herself.

Are you involved in Elena's physical preparation?
No, I don't get involved in that kind of things. Elena has a specific trainer who deals with her physical preparation.

Among Elena's achievements, which is your best memory?
Absolutely nothing compares to the gold medal at the Beijing Olympic games, nothing comes even close to that. Both as a junior player and later, Elena won many tournaments on the tour and made me really proud, but that Olympic gold is really the most important to me.

What is your favorite tournament on the Sony Ericsson WTA Tour?
Any tournament my daughter has won !
