Daniela Hantuchova was not intimidated by the Russian Makarova (6-2, 6-2). The 25-year old Slovakian will play Alizé Cornet in the next round. A taste of next April's Slovakia-France...

From the beginning of the season, Ekaterina Makarova was condemned to make a precipitated exit from the tournament, each time falling to compatriots Dementieva (Sydney) and Safina (Melbourne). At Coubertin, the World 53rd Moscow native was lucky: she didn't have to start out against a Russian. But getting a Slovakian instead, especially when it's Daniela Hantuchova, isn't doing her any good.

The 2008 Australian Open semi-finalist started out the game at the throat of her opponent. And so eight minutes into the game, Hantuchova was already leading three sets to zero. And when she continued by winning her third game with an angry ace, it looks like Makarova will have a hard time coming back in this first set (4-1, 14th).Too fragile for Hantuchova's attacks, the Russian didn't have what it takes to turn the tables. (6-2, 30th).

The second set started off in the same way. And as soon as the Bratislava player sped up the rally, Makarova headed almost directly for a fault. (6-2, 2-0, 36th). Even if she can rely on an efficient serve, 39th WTA classed Hantuchova, is far from a perfect game. But it's enough to keep on the roll (6-2, 4-1, 52th).  Daniela Hantuchova stood out in two sets (6-2, 6-2) and one hour of play to join Alizé Cornet in the second round. A foretaste of the Fed Cup since France will face Slovakia in the playoffs on 25 and 26 April.
